Stenochωreography / one moves the other doesn’t

Stenochωreography— a neologism that combines the Greek words for tight/sorrowful (steno), space (chόros), dance (chorόs), and writing (graphi) that refers to the methodological tool of ‘dance-writing’ that emerges from tight, sorrowful spaces, both inside and in the world surrounding us.

one moves, the other doesn’t

After fyllenia’s first solo creation of this work (Zomer in de Kloostertuin – Kunsthal Extra City, Konvooi Kunstenfestival – Het Entrepot), the work is now evolving into a solo for two performers in close collaboration with a sound artist where they are weaving together stories of remembrance and loss, identity and intimacy using instant composition, improvisation, and interacting with live electronics and field recordings.

Drawing upon the poetics of dance and trying to capture its ephemeral nature, the performers are looking for ways to transform into one another, h(a)unting down atmospheres, while recording and experimenting with voice and text; a performance-archive, a written chωreography, where one can move or listen to what remains and being lost. Through this written choreography, that is acting as a mantra, a promise, and a lament, the dancers seek to see performance as rehearsal where we can practice the embodied solidarity of the future – harvesting a space where we can navigate and transform our collective memories.
